The process of roll forming coil sheet is conceptually straightforward, but it must be well understood and controlled to be successful.  

General information

Roll forming machine is combine with a group of roll stands, and roll forming is a process in which shape of a coil strip is developed by gradually bending the metal through a group of roll stands. Each stand is sepcially designed according to the required, and it will generate the appropriate amount of deformation when it is work. On the whole, due to adjustments for springback and the preservation of dimension, the level of deformation is not constant for each stands.

In order to control the sheet outside dimensions, roll formers are usually designed to overwork the metal in specific stands.

If materials have to be overworked in the stands which will make the forming system have some problem. When roll forming problems occur, it is important to examine each stage of the process and not merely the stand at which the problem initially appears.

When there is uniform metal deformation throughout the whole production line, the smooth roll-forming operation will be come ture. Roll formers need to be reasonable when it is designed. They are not designed to run with material popping and wrinkling throughout the operation. If this occurs, the operation needs to be investigated.

Roll forming machine with precut or poscut

Today there have two basic types of roll forming systems: one is precut, and another is postcut. A precut operation, The incoming material is cut to a required length before roll forming. A postcut operation, the material runs continuously and is cut to the required length after roll forming.

The nature of raw material

The nature of the raw material is the one of the principal part that define the success of a roll-forming operation. In order to design the optimal process, the machine designer should know the material information before the machine is designed. Material information should includes mechanical property ranges, gauge tolerances and shape tolerances. In addition, different metallic coatings, organic coatings or paint will result in differences in performance even with the same set of tooling due to their different frictional characteristics.
